As Miss Acosta stood in front of her 4th grade class at Premier Arts Academy in Elkhart, IN it was clear that science isn’t just being taught—it’s being brought to life. With enthusiasm, she guided her students through a lively discussion, encouraging them to recall information from former lab lessons and connect prior discoveries to the lesson ahead. “Remember discovering the different beaks that birds have? Today, we are going to investigate how they use their senses to survive.”
By leading students to think critically, draw connections, and build on previous knowledge, Miss Acosta has created an environment where curiosity thrives. As she introduced the next lab, students weren’t just following instructions—they were actively engaging, and applying what they had already learned. This seamless integration of review and hands-on discovery is an example of how implementing Grade Level Certified (GLC) Curriculum is turning classrooms into vibrant hubs of exploration.
Students looked to the smart board as Miss Acosta pulled up the Scientist Notes from the GLC Platform and began writing the outline that her students would use for their research project for the final lab lesson in the GLC Unit: Nature's Architect. Students were excited to dive in choosing their animal. From lions to red pandas, and giraffes to bunny rabbits the students eagerly began their research.
"GLC is super interactive—the kids are always wanting to know more, and it leads to really good discussions.”
With their Student Data Notebooks in hand, the class quickly jumped into research mode, ready to uncover new discoveries. One excited pair, drawn to bunnies, stumbled upon a cool fact—Did You Know? Rabbits use their sense of taste to tell the difference between safe and toxic plants!
"Learning about bunnies is so interesting! I want to know more!" one student exclaimed. Inspired by their findings, they dug even deeper, sketching and coloring their posters to show how animals use their senses. As they labeled each part, their understanding of the animal world came to life in full color!
Through hands-on exploration and creativity, these young scientists aren’t just learning—they’re thinking, questioning, and discovering like real researchers!
